RETRO-STYLE PORTRAIT by tomjogi RETRO-STYLE PORTRAIT by tomjogi
this is a retro-style portrait of natalie portman from the italian vogue. i know, itīs quite difficult to recognize her in this drawing, but i choose to draw this one because i liked the referrence pic so much (and i didnīt recognize her either, the first time i looked on that picture).

nevertheless hereīs the link to that picture: [link]

though, there are some small differences between my drawing and the original, i like the outcome of this one.

materials i used: as allways, pencils, color pencils and pastels on (almost) white paper.

and as usual, comments and favs are very welcome.

many greetings

:D tomjogi

was waiting to get my words ready for this piece before I commented =P how you're talented with.. pretty much everything that has a lead.. !! Color pencils included... boy, the realism! And the picture is quite original. And I kind of laughed, seeing that you had done the girl on the cover of her book with so much detail. Took my breath away the first time... couldn't type you a comment :D But, still, excellent job! :boogie:

Those "small differences" aren't always undesirable. They are part of what make your drawing yours. If you got everything exactly like the photo, then what would you be? A human photocopier. We've got machines for that. Thus it's left to us artists--even those with realistic styles--to put a little of ourselves into our work & make it stand out.

That's a terrific illo, btw. How long did it take you to draw it & what brand of pencils do you use?

thanks for your comment! iīll keep that in mind.

it took me about 5-7 hours, donīt know the exact amount of time though, just a guess!

i use color pencils from faber castell (called polychromos) and pastels for the skin tones and backroud, also from faber castell!

This feels completely '50s, that's for sure. I love the general tone of the image, and you did a very nice job with the skin colors. You really can't tell it's Ms. Portman (it must be the haircut) but it looks good and captures the retro feel quite well.

Great work tomjogi. It's quite a 'busy' portrait in terms of 'props' etc, but you managed to draw it all with excellent detail, while keeping the focus on the person. The lightsthroughout her hair, expecially the bangs, are exceptionally well done.
The only piece of constructive criticism that I can give you on this one is with regards to the folds on her clothing; the grey of the pencil is visable and takes away from the shading. . . . but overall good job.
